A Collection of Christmas Cookies

It’s Cookie Week around here which simply means that we’re spending the whole week talking about cookies and only cookies. If you haven’t checked out Monday’s brand new biscotti recipe, hop on over and give it a read and add them to your cookie baking list too.

Christmas cookies are especially fun to make (and enjoy) because usually, they are little crunchy works of art. Here are a few of my very favorite holiday cookie recipes from the blog.

Soft Ginger Cookies

In my mind, gingerbread is the quintessential Christmas cookie. Deeply spiced and filled with molasses, they make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. This is my favorite gingerbread cookie recipe, though a bit different from the traditional. They are heavy on the ginger (like a ginger snap), but soft and fluffy and rolled in crunchy sugar. I’ve also dipped them in cream cheese glaze or drizzled them with icing and they are always perfect. Plus, this blog post contains some tips and tricks from preventing cookie spread-age.

Brown Sugar Cookies with Rosemary Butter Glaze

I don’t love sugar cookies, so these were my solution to a classic sugar cookie cut-out. Thick and chewy, they are filled with brown sugar and then dunked in a simple rosemary glaze. They are simple, but elevated and would make a great holiday party dessert. They are also stamped with adorable little cookie stamps instead of the more traditional cookie cutter method for an added aesthetic.

Chamomile and Apricot Linzer Cookies

A Christmas cookie spread is not a Christmas cookie spread without Linzer cookies. Known by their famous little filled windows, Linzers feature two shortbread cookies sandwiched with jam. In this version, a floral chamomile shortbread cookie is filled with bright apricot jam. They are simple and adorable and you won’t be able to get enough of them.

Butterscotch Oatmeal Cookies with Hazelnuts and Espresso

This is one of my favorite recent blog recipes. A thick, chewy oatmeal cookie absolutely stuffed with butterscotch, toasted hazelnuts, and fragrant espresso. What could be better?

Hawaij Snickerdoodles

Hawaij is one of my very favorite fall/winter spices and I’m always looking for ways to incorporate it during the holiday season. It’s a Yemini spice blend featuring lots of ground ginger and cardamom, plus a few other warming spices. In this recipe, we incorporate it into a classic snickerdoodle to create a cooke reminiscent of Cinnamon Toast Crunch and I’m 100% into it. And an added bonus: any leftover hawaij is really fantastic stirred into your morning coffee.

White Chocolate Cherry Cookies with Rose Butter

This was one of the very first Christmas cookie recipes I developed and I created it for my momma. Floral rose petals are steeped into the butter and then the soft cookies are studded with white chocolate pieces and big dried red cherries.

Chocolate Espresso Crinkle Cookies

Winter snowballs but make them cookies. A fudgy, brownie like interior is packed with dark chocolate and espresso and then each cookie is rolled in powdered sugar for that just-took-a-dip-in-freshly-packed-snow look. A Christmas classic.

Fig Butter and Blue Cheese Rugelach

Ok here me out. Save this recipe for the first week of January when you are in holiday-recovery mode and need to use up all of the leftover scraps in your fridge. Charcuterie board leftovers turned cookies are what we have here. I used fig jam and blue cheese, but you can fill these little rugelach with any combination you can imagine.

There’s no better gift than homemade bread. Focaccia is one of the lower-maintance breads, doesn’t need a sourdough starter, and most of its rising is done while you sleep. Mix up a batch for Christmas dinners or take to a holiday party to share with friends.

Parmesan Herb Popovers

Christmas morning breakfast is one of the most important meals of the holiday season. If you’re looking for a little something savory to balance out your traditional cinnamon roll sugar rush, make a batch of popovers. The batter is mixed together ahead of time so that all that’s left to do on Christmas morning is pour it into a muffin tin, bake them off, and open gifts.

Tahini Orange Cinnamon Rolls with Browned Butter Cream Cheese Frosting

Gingerbread Cake with Molasses and Tumeric Cream Cheese Frosting

My rendition of the classic gingerbread cake. This cake is super moist and dense, filled with spicy fresh ginger and dark, chocolatey carob molasses. The bright yellow frosting has a little spice thanks to the addition of turmeric and everything is topped with candied ginger and toasted pecans.

Coquito Tiramisu

If you’ve never had coquito before, today is the day. Coquito is a traditional Puerto Rican holiday drink made with thick coconut cream, a little bit of cinnamon, and of course, rum. This dessert is a classic tiramisu with a tropical twist—lady fingers soaked in coquito, a sweetened condensed milk zabaglione, and lots of toasted coconut.

Cranberry Orange Clafoutis

What’s a holiday table without cranberries? These festive little fruits shine in this cranberry orange clafoutis. A traditional, but very simple French custard filled with orange zest is poured over sugared cranberries and baked just until set. Serve your clafoutis hot, cold, or at room temperature with a big dollop of whipped cream.

Sweet Potato and Rye Coffee Cake

If someone asked my to choose my favorite blog recipe, this just might be it. This cake is soft and moist, a buttermilk cake batter filled with sweet potatoes and warming spices. The cake bakes up into giant, thick squares, topped with a crunchy ginger oat topping and browned butter glaze. If you only make one recipe this season—this should be it.

Banana Muffins with Cinnamon Oat Crumble

Simple banana muffins are a quick and easy way to use up leftover bananas in a way that isn’t banana bread. They are topped with a spiced, cinnamon oat crumble and are best served warm with lots of salted butter.

Einkorn Pecan Sticky Buns

My fancy take on my mom’s sticky buns. There is nothing more comforting than a pan of warm sticky buns, straight out of the oven, dripping with gooey caramel. This recipe features a sweet dough made with einkorn flour, a simple cinnamon sugar filling, and a brown sugar caramel glaze studded with pecans.

Chocolate Tahini Brioche Babka

One of my very favorite project bakes! If you are looking for a more in-depth activity for a cold, gloomy weekend at home, this is it. Rich, buttery brioche dough is swirled and shaped with a chocolate tahini filling and you’re left with the prettiest, tastiest, dessert you’ve ever made.

Grapefruit and Ricotta Flan

A fun spin on my mother-in-law’s famous flan. Creamy ricotta cheese and grapefruit (or any citrus zest) create a rich, smooth custard that gets baked with a caramel topping. This is a great make-ahead recipe that is perfect for showing off at dinner parties and potlucks.

Caramel Almond Snack Cake

This cake was inspired by a breakfast cake I had at a coffee shop in Bordeaux so you know it is good. And it is so simple. A yogurt and olive oil cake batter that can be mixed together in one bowl is poured over a caramelized almond topping before baking. Once baked, the whole cake is inverted to reveal a very photogenic, crunchy almond sugar topping.

Fall Apple Cake

Another one of my mom’s recipes that I adapted and tweaked to fit my vibe. This is a THICK cake, filled with so many apples is basically apples bound together with a little bit of cake. It’s frosted with a classic cream cheese frosting and swirled and drizzled with homemade salted caramel to finish.

French Apple Torte

Another apple cake with a very different feel. This is cake is super light, thanks to whipped egg whites, and fresh apple slices are tucked into the batter just before baking. It’s served with a simple, maple tahini cream and the whole thing just embodies fall.
